ساموراي شوداون ،اول العاب السلسلة وعلى عكس العاب القتال اﻷخرى اللتي تقام فالعصر الحديث ،يقام عالم هذه اللعبة في العصور القديمة وتعتبر اول لعبة قتال تعتمد اسلوب القتال باﻷسلحة وسرعان ما اصبح اسلوب اللعبة مشهورا وتناقلته اﻷلعاب اﻷخرى ،تركز اللعبة على الضربات السريعة اكثر من الكومبو مع اضافة حركة بطيئة فالكاميرا عند تكثيف الضربات على الخصم .حصلت اللعبة على تقييم عالي وحصلت على جائزة افضل لعبة قتال بعد ستريت فايتر الثانية في ذالك الوقت.

Samurai Shodown, known as Samurai Spirits(サムライスピリッツ Samurai Supirittsu?,Samu Supi in short) in Japan, is a competitivefighting game developed and published bySNK for their Neo Geo arcade and home platform. Released in 1993, it is the first installment in the Samurai Shodown series. In contrast to other fighting games at the time, which were set in modern times and focused primarily on hand-to-hand combat, Samurai Shodown is set in feudal-era Japan (similar toKaneko's Shogun Warriors) and was one of the first fighting games to focus primarily on weapon-based combat after the success ofCapcom's Street Fighter II.
